Author - Rex Stout (Nero Wolfe)

Most people want to hide their sins, but the rich can afford to pay millions to cover up their sins.  But because the author Rex Stout was reared as a Quaker, he well understood what the Bible says in Numbers 14:18 that “The LORD is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.”  In this case, an extremely wealthy man fathered a girl by an unwed mother, and while he provided for the girl and her mother through to the child’s adulthood, the girl never knew her father.  When the girl grew up, she too bore a child by a wealthy man out of wedlock.  From there the narrative moves to murder, and only Stout’s lead character, Private Detective Nero Wolfe, is able to put the pieces together to solve the multiple crimes (and generational sins before God) involved in this mystery.
