Author Rex Stout

Now that this book is one of the few Stout novels made into an A & E television movie, and sold as DVD reproductions, these paperback copies are becoming rare and expensive.  As the novel begins, a college professor fools Wolfe’s assistant, Archie Goodwin, into believing that he is a giant corporate tycoon.  The professor is trying to expose the sex-crazed tycoon because that man has stolen his wife’s affections.  But she is not alone.  As Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin go deeper into the case, it turns out that this married tycoon has scores of female lovers coming and going from his pornography-lined secret apartment.  But when the licentious man turns up dead, clients––from poor hispanic immigrants to other wealthy corporate scions––cry out to Wolfe to solve the case.  This is one of the few Wolfe novels where a child ends up being one of the murder victims.  But it is one of many Wolfe novels written to prove the Bible axiom: “The love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6: 10).
